The average basket abandonment rate is one of the least useful numbers in e-commerce - because it says nothing about the cause. And the causes are specific and, for the most part, fixable. Here are the seven we see most often with our clients, and what you can realistically do about each.
Why the causes matter, not the average
"We have 70% abandonment" is a sentence you can't do anything with. Only breaking it down by cause shows where the money is: fixing delivery-cost shock is a different job from fixing an unanswered product question. So we start with a diagnosis, not another remarketing campaign.
7 causes and what to do about them
- Delivery cost revealed at the end. Hidden until the last step - show it early and consider a free delivery threshold.
- Forced registration. Add guest checkout; offer an account after the purchase.
- Too few payment methods. A missing BLIK or instant bank transfer option can kill conversion - add the methods popular in your market.
- An unanswered question. The customer hesitates over compatibility or a specification - an AI assistant in the basket answers immediately instead of pointing them to email.
- Uncertainty about availability or delivery date. Show real stock levels and dispatch times (consistency with your WMS helps here).
- Checkout too long. Cut the fields to a minimum, show a progress bar, remember customer details.
- Lack of trust. Visible reviews, a returns policy and contact details lower the resistance to "buy now".
The role of search and the assistant
Two causes from the list above - unanswered questions and uncertainty - are AI territory. The ecChat assistant answers questions at the moment of hesitation (availability, compatibility, delivery), and a good search engine never lets the "couldn't find it, so I'm leaving" situation arise in the first place.
At Ciepło24.pl the assistant handles around 819 conversations a month, and 43% of them take place outside working hours - exactly the moments when an unanswered question used to end in an abandoned basket.
How to measure it in your store
- Build your checkout funnel step by step and find the step with the biggest drop-off.
- Collect the questions customers ask your support team just before buying - that's your map of real objections.
- Test one change at a time, so you know what actually worked.
FAQ
Isn't remarketing enough?
Remarketing brings the customer back, but it doesn't remove the reason they left. Without fixing the checkout and answering questions, the same customer will abandon their basket again.
How does a chatbot help in the basket?
It answers questions at the moment of hesitation - about compatibility, availability and delivery - instead of pointing customers to an email they won't wait for.
Where do I start if I have a small team?
With the single step in your funnel with the biggest drop-off. One well-chosen fix usually delivers more than ten small ones at once.
